Kiss FM advert, 360 degree style!
Last month I was approached by the good folk at The Ark Productions to oversee a new advert they were making for Kiss FM using this contraption below:
That’s a 3D printed 360 degree GoPro rig, designed to allow 6 GoPro cameras to capture absolutely everything happening around a single point.
It’s the sort of thing you can use to make one of those videos you can pan around yourself whilst the video is playing, so you can see every angle.
It can also be used though to create ‘little planets’ - the effect where the horizon ends up being mapped on to a sphere, and trees / buildings etc appear to pop out from a marble like world in the middle. Click the video to see more.
The technicalities involved soon became clear to me and Theo (who would end up editing the video you see above - and what an amazing job he did too!), it’s not a technique you can use lightly or expect perfect results from. What’s also very hard to get across to people is that there is nowhere in the room that is safe. You have to be completely obscured from view in order to be out of shot! So you end up with the bizarre situation of calling action, then running out of the room, shutting the door and hoping the actors do what you asked them too! And you can’t review the effect unless you download all 6 cameras into the computer and stitch them together, a process which takes a lot of time!
Having said all that, the end result is wicked but it was a big learning curve and you almost have to rethink film making from the ground up - literally!
Short music documentary I edited featuring legendary crate digger DJ Shadow as he embarked on a three date residency at London’s Village Underground on the ‘Shadowsphere’ tour.
The man behind the beats explains the concept behind the Shadowsphere and the influences behind his latest record, The Less You Know, the Better.

In January I was approached to make a video for the grand re-opening of Liverpool’s Everyman Theatre on March 1st. It was a great opportunity to film with some great actors who’d cut their teeth there in their youth and also to test drive the new Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera which delivered some incredible results. This is just a snippet of the final film which will be shown on opening night, but I love the look from the camera and the emotive black and white I got from it’s image. Good luck, Everyman!
John Newman - Lyrically Influenced (VEVO LIFT UK) (by JohnNewmanVEVO)
I’ve been working on a series of films about new UK soul artist John Newman over the last few months - it’s been an incredible process shooting half hour documentaries worth of material at a time and condensing them into super stylish 2-3 minute edits for VEVO.
This has to be my favourite one of the series so far as I got to play with typography and graphics to bring to life the lyrics to one of John’s songs.
The Voice UK 2013 | ONLINE EXCLUSIVE: Backstage at Final rehearsals - The Live Final - BBC One (by BBC)
It’s been an awesome six months working on The Voice UK Series 2 - with some of the nicest people in telly ever and stacks of great content, here’s the 2nd to last piece I’ve made for them, in the run up to the Final tonight (22nd June 2013) - consider it a swan song, if you will, to weeks of hard work and great fun working on a fab show.
Hitchcock Blonde - Animal [Official Video] (by Hitchcock Blonde)
Here it is, at last - the first fruits of my New Year’s resolution to make more films in 2013! Filmed back in February but the single is released today (you can buy it here: http://hitchcockblonde.bandcamp.com/track/animal-2).
We had a clear brief to make this as 1950’s looking as possible, with a narrative throughout of the perfect woman who doesn’t want to be perfect any more (played by the excellent Lucia Coward), culminating in explosive scenes in the TV studio while the band plays on.
Shot over two days on location in a house boat (!) on the Grand Union Canal and at the studio of Ealing, Hammersmith & West London College, this was my first project using the amazing Panasonic GH3 which performed incredibly. It was so great to be able to plug in a monitor and let the styling team and the band see the results of our work in real time, which is something that doesn’t work on a Canon DSLR - because it turns off the camera screen when you plug in a HDMI monitor. On the Panasonic, it doesn’t - WIN!
We shot in colour but set the monitor to black and white so we could get an idea of the final product, the detail captured by the camera was insane, and it was almost a shame to film effect it, but I think that the treatment in the end looks really great too! Stay tuned for my next video which will be in colour :-)
Thanks to Dave White for recommending me and to Hitchcock Blonde for being really awesome the whole time and a pleasure to work with.
